Daio-Paper

It is the second wild boardroom drama to shake up corporate Japan in days: the country’s leading tissue maker, Daio Paper, said on Friday that it would file a criminal complaint against its former chairman, accusing him of illicitly borrowing $140 million in company money and channeling some of it to a Las Vegas casino company.
The controversy provides yet another lens into the seemingly free-wheeling behavior — and disregard for corporate governance — still seen among top management at some of Japan’s leading companies.

Japan’s 12.1 trillion yen ($160 billion) extra budget for rebuilding northeast coastal areas devastated by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami will likely boost gross domestic product by around 1.7 percent, the government said on Friday.
The effect will be mostly felt in the fiscal year starting next April, mainly in the form of public spending, the Cabinet Office said.

The Fukushima nuclear accident released double the amount of cesium-137 into the atmosphere than the government initially estimated, reaching 40 percent of the total emitted during the Chernobyl disaster, a preliminary report said.
The estimate of much higher levels of cesium-137 comes from a worldwide network of sensors. Report coauthor Andreas Stohl, of the Norwegian Institute for Air Research, said the government estimate came only from data in Japan and didn’t include emissions blown out to the Pacific Ocean.
Cesium-137 is considered harmful because it can remain in the environment for decades, …

Ageing-population-in-Japan

Companies have been urged to give their employees more time off to procreate; shops have offered discounts for larger families; and the government has introduced child allowances to lift the birthrate.

That change in direction has meant more criminal involvement in the boardroom.
The Japanese authorities have stamped out sokaiya – mob-sponsored racketeers who threatened to disrupt shareholder meetings unless they were paid off.
