Himeji Castle to undergo renovation

Tourists are flocking to Himeji Castle prior to major renovation work that starts in April, according to city officials. The 17th-century castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is inundated with visitors hoping for a last look of the historic structure before it is placed under wraps. It will be hidden from public view until March 2015.

The major renovation works will be carried out on the main keep of Himeji Castle from April 2010 until March 2015. The main keep will be covered by scaffolding, starting April 12, 2010. Access to the interior of the main keep will be impossible from April 12, 2010 until early 2011 and partially restricted thereafter until 2015.
