Actress Erika Sawajiri returns to Japan and the spotlight

Actress Erika Sawajiri is making a comeback. After establishing herself with critically acclaimed movie roles, she committed career suicide in 2007 at a movie PR event, which amounted into a new public opinion of her that was not favorable at all. She then married a man twice her age, Takashiro Tsuyoshi (45), and left Japan. It’s been two and a half years since she last worked, after her refusal to play the public relations game changed her image from hugely promising actress to spoiled showbiz drama queen. With the final stake being thrust last September when her management agency, Stardust Promotion cut her loose saying only that she had been in serious breach of her contractual obligations.

But that’s all in the past and yesterday she appeared at a press conference for the beauty clinic chain Takano Yuri, for whom she will be promoting products. Asked if she would retract the recently announced legal requirement for media people to sign a six-point agreement before getting access to her press releases, Sawajiri said no. She said she has been surprised by the media backlash against her. She still desires that reporters respect her privacy and public image. But she was clearly also trying to get back on their good side, bowing and expressing her apology several times and even choking up when talking about the support that she has been receiving from fans.

After deciding to produce herself, her acting career is starting to look promising as well, especially overseas where she is entertaining offers from her agent in Los Angeles with promising roles for her in the American market.

A new photo book is planned for a release in April as well. It was shot by a British cameraman and close friend of Takashiro. It will be a purely artistic collection of photographs and a must-have for all her fans.
