Porn Star Costume or Kimono with Attitude? Miss Universe Japan steams up a debate…

This is Emiri Miyasaka, who is representing Japan in the Miss Universe Pageant for 2009, in her all leather Japanese national costume.

The costume was designed by Yoshiyuki Ogata, the designer/owner of the designer brand “Yoshiyuki.”

Kimonos are supposed to be the symbol of the “Modest Japanese Woman.” But ,this is reminiscent of the costumes worn by the girls from “Soap Land” in Yoshiwara. Yoshiyuki Ogata has gotten more than 1000 protests over this all leather kimono costume and is albeit reveling in the publicity. The biggest complaint comes from the company in Ginza that donated the “obi” belt for the kimono without knowing the designer’s full intentions.

People from around the world are arguing that the outfit makes her look like a “Porn Star.”

What do you think of this costume and Miss Universe Japan?

  2. I think it is a modern expression of Japan. It shows that Japanese women are no longer to `be seen and not heard.` It expresses that she is a modern women with desires and a personality all her own. She can be smart and sexy.

Again the old guard cannot understand such ideas. When will people understand that Japan has changed as a culture?

  4. hahahahaha… this outfit looks a bit disturbing in a way.

I’ve always found that a kimono on a young woman looks sort of sexy, and a young woman in lingerie as well.. but.. combining the 2 is a bit distracting :S it’s like having a painting that looks like it’s a Rembrandt on one side and a Picasso on the other.. it just doesn’t fit.

And i also don’t like the choice of material for the kimono, for basically the same reasons.

However, to say something good about it.. it somehow does look like it’s a representation of Japan’s modern day culture.. like.. how the old (kimono) co-exists with the new (lingerie) and how the old gets modernised in ways that might not seem appealing to everybody (leather).

  6. I doubt that anyone would wear a kimono like that when they are out n’ about. Phone cam guys would not even have to be sneaky to get upskirts 🙂

  8. The costume designer Yoshiyuki is not Japanese(He is Korean). I feel his clothes do not express the Japanese spirit. His designs are just an immitation of Japanese pop culture and he is making them for foreign users who don’t know Japan well.

  10. This doesn’t look remotely related to anything worn at Yoshiwara. If you want a modern and flamboyant take on those customes, see Sakuran.

If anything, what she wears here looks much more like the “fake” easy-wear, split in two kimono, except in leather and she forgot the skirt (hence her “I know I forgot something but can’t remember what” expression, probably).

  14. This is fashion disaster. But she’s still very pretty. I heard that the costume designer of Miss Japan is not Japanese, that’s the reason why she lost her Japaneseness in this costume.

  16. It says to me that a woman is not in control of her own self. She’s either repressed or a sex fiend. No in between. Under ever conservative kimono is a girl who just wants lots of sex. I don’t like it. Either way the woman is not in control. It looks like it’s being ripped off of her. I think it’s just as bad for women to be looked at like this as it is to be forced to cover up. She looks dumb, like she lost her skirt.

  18. thats sad. Its just like in america where we were supposed to believe that cristina aguilara was some kind of new modern woman and not a slut. her being a sexual person has nothing to do with japan and its culture. and it certainly shouldnt be on display like this. but then again thats what most of these contests are about. whats truly beautiful isnt whats under that kimono. but thats what this picture is showing us.

  20. she looks like a fucking slut and it’s an INSULT to Japan to have her parade around in this shit! This is NOT a kimono and she should have been kicked off of Miss Universe for such attire. That has no place in japan.(her slut kimono–as it’s called by some)
