Fireworks Show Blast Claims a Spectator’s Life in Japan — 3 More in Critical Condition

A 44-year-old woman died Saturday due to an explosion that occurred Thursday night at a fireworks festival site in Kyoto Prefecture, western Japan, police said.

The woman, Hiromi Takeuchi, was among the 60 people taken to hospitals after the blast in Fukuchiyama. The blast is suspected of having been caused after gasoline for an electricity generator at a food stall caught fire.

This is the first death confirmed in the accident.

Among others being treated at hospitals, three are in critical condition, including an eight-year-old girl and a 10-year-old boy, according to the prefectural police department.

The explosion occurred at around 7:30 p.m. Thursday 10:30 a.m. GMT, right before the fireworks festival was scheduled to start.
