Japan to help pay way for U.S. bases

Japan says it will continue to help pay expenses to maintain U.S. military bases in that country to ensure the current level of security.

The expenses, known as host nation support, cover the cost of utilities and salaries of Japanese employees working on U.S. bases, Kyodo News reported Wednesday.

"I believe that with the changing circumstances in security, the importance of host nation support at this point is growing," Chief Cabinet Secretary Sengoku said addressing regional security issues including China.
