Japan’s unemployment rate rose unexpectedly as deflation drags down recovery

Japan’s unemployment rate rose unexpectedly and its consumer price index continued sliding on Friday as deflation and weak domestic demand persisted in dragging down recovery from a deep recession.

Japan’s core consumer price index, which excludes volatile fresh food prices, fell 1.5 percent in April from a year earlier, marking the 14th straight month of decline and exceeding a 1.2 percent drop in March.
