We talked about “Vegetarian Boys.” And here is something more that’s popular with Japanese boys.

Skirts are not only for girls any more in Japan. There are also boys that wear “Skirts” in trendy cities such as Harajuku and Aoyama.

Boy skirts are not brand new, they have been done by Jean Paul Gaultier and Vivian Westwood, but this fashion is spreading as it gets trendier among today’s Tokyo boys of fashion.

Long black skirts are the most popular, but some boys wear short skirts over pants. The most popular skirts are going for over $200.

With this new trend Japanese fashion is going beyond gender’s difference. Part of it might even be the proximity of women at the stores as the boys frequent women’s stores to buy the skirts.

My girl calls them “Herbivores”. I’m safely in the “Carnivore” section according to her but hey, whatever, everyone’s got the right to “Happiness” in whatever way they see fit.

Although it shouldn’t be, it really is random that these boys are wearing skirts. Not my thing, I have to say..

I’ve recently come into contact with the term ‘herbivore’. This craze could be something of a fad or could be the source of something deeper. Herbivore seems to be the default term for ‘girly men’ in Japan. However, I find it amusing that after years Japanese women telling men they don’t want anything to do with them because they don’t look like , they want ‘carnivores’. Maybe the whole ‘herbivore’ movement is an indicator of something in Japan’s backyard that needs to be cleaned up.

He probably has no gender confusion whatsoever; he may very well just enjoy wearing a dress! The dress is an ancient item of clothing worn by men for millennia and infact only very recently, very wrongly given solely to females; it is after all also only very recently that females were persecuted for wearing trousers! So leave him alone, Life is short and if how he spends his peaceful life offends you then the problem is yours, not his!

[BionicBong] [...]

I think this trend of guys in skirts is totally cool. I’ve been wearing skirts for years to concerts, festivals, dances and just being comfortable around the house. I have heard that this trend is popularin Japan and hope it grows more in the USA. At Contra Dances here (English Country Folk Dance) a handful of guys usually wear long, flowing skirts to dance in and it is pretty much accepted. I have worn a three-tiered, ankle-length skirt to a dance and had a lot of fun and women gave me compliments like “that skirt looks nice on you”. I also still wear a long skirt to Goth concerts/clubs where you may still see a couple guys wearing skirts. Lately, I’ve been wearing my skirts to Cafes and Parks as well. Thanks for the article and initiating discussion on this awesome trend. My blog is all about guys rocking skirts (you can click on my name above to visit). Cheers to a skirted future!

Rome exiled men in pants in 393AD. In 867AD the Bulgars asked the Pope if they could be Christians even though they wore trousers. Centuries later, Pantalone, the top clown of the Italian Comedy of the Arts, gave his name to pants, which the audience thought appropriate for a ridiculous person. Horseback riding over long centuries put men into pants. Horses were the best land transportation, and militaries could not compete without them. Atop the horse, the legs are “divided,” ergo pants, a divided leg garment. But we seldom get about with horses today yet we are STUCK (courtesy of PSYCHIATRY and RELIGION) with a garment that's not comfortable due to binding men's crotches! Roman legions wore skirts you gonna say these ferocious soldiers were effeminate? Factory work in WW2 was the ONLY thing that was able to free women to “dress like men.” But skirts and pants are ACTIVITY differences, NEVER sex differences! BOO and THUMBS DOWN to the mental health (social conformity) cult that insists on calling men in skirts cross dressers! But make no mistake; bras are female due to female interface!! http://www.dfwseekwoman.net

i think it is great that boys can wear a skirt if they want to when i was going through school (a long time ago) there was no way i could have got away with wearing a skirt even though i would have loved to.
for any male to try going out wearing a skirt or dress he would have been beat up if not by the other boys then by the teachers.

now i am older i wear whatever i want to which is mainly skirts.
