We have a serious problem of fewer children in Japan these days. There are some causes of it, and today, I focus on Soushoku Danshi (Vegetarian Boys).
Vegetarian Boys are not literally Vegetarian, but they are not active in dating or in pursuit of girls. So they are not hunters. This is why they are called vegetarian. They are of course interested in those things, but they think it is better to spend money and time doing their own business than working hard to get a girl’s attention.
Followings are other points of Soushoku Danshi (by Wikipedia).
- They respect women equally as men (which is different from how Japanese boys used to be)
- They spend more time with their male friends and families.
- Have very fragile hearts and fear to be hurt, also afraid of hurting others.
- Their energy goes to their hobby, works and fashions instead of going to dating.
- They travel or go shopping if girls ask them to go, but their relationships are hard to develop into love.
- They think sex culture is just a waste of time, and don’t spend their money for it.
- Girls usually think of them as good persons, but don’t consider them as boyfriends.
- Nothing would happen if girls spent the night with them.
- They like staying at home more than going out.
- They love sweets and cooking.
- They like traveling in Japan, but are not interested in going abroad.
Specialists say one of the possible reasons of Vegetarian Boys increase in number is the principle of the equality of the sexes, which came from western culture. When Japanese women started insisting rights and got stronger positions in society they paid a price. Some boys think they are too independent and not so “Yamato Nadeshiko” or feminine and modest. It was because of “Yamato Nadeshiko” that Japanese boys felt they had to protect women. Now, some boys believe and say, “Figures are better than real girls, because they don’t talk back rudely, and never get old and ugly!”
And women are confused, too. They are not asked to date even if they try to look attractive. There are always fewer males than females at matchmaking parties.
If Soushoku Danshi keep increasing, Japanese seeds are going to go extinct. We will just have to wait and see what’s going to happen in the next few decades…

Could it be that not all homosexuals are caricatures like “Hard Gay”? I’m sorry, but has any other voice (Wikipedia??) on this topic suggested that these vegetarian boys are likely to be same-sex inclined? I hope this is the beginning of a sexual revolution…as cryptic as it is.

It’s not a bad thing. Darwin-wise, with the overpopulation, less breeders would mean greater survival of the species.
Vegetarian Boys are not gay, though. They are just shy and don’t want to get their emotions hurt. They have lost their chivalry cause women are now stronger and more independent. They have lost their role of supporting and protecting their partner completely and have introverted themselves with fantasy. They spend most of their time on their hobbies, the internet, and so on. They’ve lost the urge.
Japanese guys are stupid! There is no other explanation!!

I doubt that these vegetarian boys are gay. If they were gay, they would be fairly open about it. Japan has had gay samurai in the past – it’s not like gays would have trouble now.
The problem is akin to the marriage strike in the West.
In America, men don’t want to get married because of the high risks of divorce.
Furthermore, even though it’s not PC to say so, men want to marry virgins. Sexually liberated women aren’t worth fighting over. Yamato Nadeisco types, on the other hand, are precious. Men who have Yamato Nadeisco wives are envied. Men who have liberated wives are pitied.
Here’s a rude awakening: sex is not as great as it’s cracked up to be. Sex appeal is not enough to keep men interested. There’s always a cuter girl around the corner.
And if you’re not going to keep the girl, why bother with a one-night stand? If she means nothing to you, she’s not worth the time.
Romantic love was a very fragile creation of patriarchal marriage. Feminism destroyed patriarchy, therefore romantic love is dead. There is still some real sex and lots of porn, but romantic love is history.

By and large, beyond what’s on a Japanese Variety show, I’d say gays are less accepted in Japan than you say. Even with this past samurai thing you speak of, I would say that overall, it’s less accepted in Japan than what I’d seen in America.
People here hide it their entire lives, both so they can maintain their jobs, and so they can impress their families by having wives and children.
Also, men here would be happy to marry most anyone, but they’re a shy lot, and if they don’t meet someone in high school, college, or via work, they’re usually somewhat SOL. This isn’t a culture that meets other strangers ‘out on the town.’ I don’t think it’s because they’re searching for virgins.
A lot of men here are enjoying the porn because they’re too damn shy to get near the real thing.
In the end, I think they just kind of give up and go play video games.

Looks like the last smart group of men lives in Japan. At last some sense for the thick headed male gender. Yes!! live for urself. The only one u can really love is urself. No one else matters.

Well said! But a man can also screw women without spending much money, and most certainly without getting married or making babies.
The ’soushoku danshi’ of Japan, have simply gone their own way. More specifically, they are cloaked in ghost mode. I doubt they are gay. And you can be assured that this is not limited to only Japan.
Men, do not marry, spend your time and money an yourself and your hobbies, and it’s up to you if you want to get some pussy on the side.

Japanese boys grew up in a world where their fathers ordered their mothers around, treating their wives more like servants than partners. That’s all changed now with equality hitting Japan, so these young guys have got no idea what to do. There’s no instruction manual for them and we all know that Japanese people are incapable of free thinking! They need to be told what to do and this is the first generation living with equality…and it isn’t working out very well, is it?
After living in Japan, the word “Women’s Lib” is not so clear cut. Women in Japan carry their load, but they do not get as many special privilges as in the English-speaking West.
To us, J-women seem traditional and cute, but to Japanese men, they seem shallow caricatures of their mothers-hence the lack of interest. I guess they just have higher standards then we do. Factor in the inability of industrial economies to propagate a middle class life style to the young and Japanese men aren’t in a hurry for marriage.
I’ve heard the phrase herbivore being used but never vegetarian. I imagine they are the same concept. People commenting seem to be clueless. Herbivores are more like many males in the West. We had it before Japan. In Britain it was called the Emergence of the new man and he is in most of modern men today in Europe (I’m not sure about America – I doubt it). Japan is just a little behind. They aren’t pansies, they’re just becoming how we are more like in the West. Can I point out that japanese women decided they prefered Western men because of the many Carnivorous men in Japan subjecting them to a limiting role? They like us because we are more herbivorous.
I think this article is exaggerated very much. They are not going to become extinct. Don’t be silly. This isn’t a major crisis it’s just a change in time like Europe has had earlier in the 20th Century.

This is basically men saying ‘eff it to modern society. They’re going their own way. Its basically a reaction to being treated like crap by the women of their affection. Decent men breaking their backs to keep a society running only to be thought less of than dirt by the people, namely females, that benefit from it. Men nowadays are basically the unthanked, doing the unnecessary, for the the ungrateful, being led by the unqualified. A lot of men are wising up the to BS of modern society, seeing that the Return of Investment is crap, and saying screw it. This isn’t relegated to Japan. America, Canada, UK, EU, Australia, etc. are having the male population disappear in plain sight, refusing to play a game that’s been rigged against then from the get-go.
Closing thought: I find it real funny how a lot of women want the old-school Toshiro Mifune alpha male type, but resent men for being that when they step to them. Years of wanting guys to be like Cloud Strife, Sephiroth, and whatever anime pretty boy is starting to bite the little dears in the rear. The economy in Japan been slipping for about forever and a day and now the dears are running for cover. Suck it up.
This article is written by an American feminist who has no knowledge of greater Japan, beyond her narrow circle of 30+, unmarried J-women. Both men and women aren’t as gung-ho with marriage because we live in commercial societies that bring out the worst in us. Japanese women want to shop instead of taking care of kids; Japanese men want some free time, instead of being at the office all day.
There is one thing this article does well-it highlights who whipped and deprived the English-speaking male is. Most foreign men don’t cater to their women like we do-they have a perspective. Any Japanese guy has ready access to friendly, groomed women. It’s just not a big deal. I am curious to see how Japan changes in the subsequent decades. My guess is, not nearly as much as we think it will.
