CEATEC, Asia’s biggest tech fair opens in Japan

Smartphones detecting bad breath and radiation, twistable remote controls and a super-thin tablet computer featured among the cutting-edge gadgets at Asia’s biggest tech fair in Japan on Tuesday.

Around 600 firms unveiled their innovations at the Combined Exhibition of Advanced Technologies (Ceatec) exhibition in Chiba, near Tokyo, expected to draw 200,000 visitors during its five-day run, organisers said.

The impact of Japan’s March 11 earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster gave added resonance to technologies on display, particularly those aimed at improving urban infrastructure and energy efficiency.

TDK Reveals 1TB Optical Disc – Blu-ray in trouble

Saturday during CEATEC 2010 in Japan, TDK Corp revealed a prototype dual-sided optical disc with a total capacity of 1 TB, trumping the current BDXL specification of 100 GB and 128 GB. One side of TDK’s prototype was shown to contain 16 recording layers of 32 GB each, adding up to 512 GB per side.

According to TDK, this was accomplished by creating a disc material with a high light transmittance. "The material has already been used for part of a Blu-ray disc," the company said during the show. "So, it does not have a problem of, for example, durability."

Camera first then a Phone!

Making its debut Tuesday at CEATEC in Japan, the new Lumix camera phone has arrived and is much more camera than phone for those wishing their phone took better pictures. You will probably recognize Lumix as Panasonic’s popular camera line that is sold worldwide but now the brand has expanded to introduce their first Lumix brand mobile phone.

The Lumix Camera Phone is expected to have removable storage, Wi-Fi capability, a 13.2 megapixel image sensor, integrated flash and a touchscreen that allows the user to perform phone functions.

REGZA — 3D without the Glasses Takes the Prize at CEATEC

During CEATEC JAPAN, held October 5-7, the judges visited booths in Makuhari Messe and discussed and decided 8 category-specific prizes and one grand-prix finalist, as well as a special Smart Grid /Green IT award. Mr. Michael Kanellos, chairman of the judging team, said at ceremony, “The winners of each prize show an outstanding and long history of Japanese electronics industries, so it was very difficult to select each prize. Toshiba’s Glasses-less 3D REGZA is, among many strong competitors, the most valuable for consumers, because it is not only innovative, but has excellent image quality, high performance, a user friendly interface, beautiful cosmetic design and is overall a totally sophisticated product. The judges were unanimous in their decision to award this prize. Other very competitive products and technologies, such as Panasonic’s 3D lens for digital camera and TDK’s see-through OLED display are very innovative and valuable for consumer, and it was a very difficult decision to decide amongst so many choices, but the REGZA ran away with the prize this year.”

Wrapping up the presentation, Mr. Kanellos said, “We enjoyed and thank the Japanese electronics industries for the many technical innovations and cool products we have seen at CEATEC 2010. We again expect even more innovative and cool technologies at CEATEC 2011.”
