JAXA Rocket Information Stolen by Computer Virus

Japan’s space agency said on Friday that information on one of its newest rockets was stolen from a desktop computer by someone using a computer virus.

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency said that the virus in a computer at its Tsukuba Space Center northeast of Tokyo was found to be secretly collecting data and sending it outside the agency. The agency said that after the virus was detected by antivirus software on Nov. 21, it conducted an emergency sweep for viruses that showed no other computers at the center had been infected.

Virus Infects Computers in Japan’s Parliament

Computers in Japan’s Parliament have been found to be infected with a virus, officials said on Tuesday, the latest in a series of mysterious cyberattacks that have raised concerns about the leakage of sensitive information.

Personal computers used by three members of the lower house, as well as possibly a computer server, were infected by the virus, the top government spokesman, Chief Cabinet Secretary Osamu Fujimura, told reporters. He did not give details, but local media reports said the virus apparently had been used to hack into computers sometime in the past three months. The reports said log-in information and e-mails may have been stolen.

Media reports said one of the three lawmakers opened an e-mail attachment that released the virus.

Japan: Legislation criminalizing computer viruses passed

The Diet on Friday enacted legislation to criminalize the creation of computer viruses as part of Japan’s efforts to establish domestic laws urged by the Convention on Cybercrime, an international treaty aiming to improve the investigation of cybercrime. With the bill to revise the Penal Code passing the House of Councillors by an overwhelming majority, the government will begin the process of officially joining the treaty. Under the revised Penal Code, a person who creates a computer virus without a reasonable cause could be sentenced to up to three years in prison or fined as much as 500,000 yen.
