Recording found of popular singer Hibari Misora taken during 1950 U.S. tour

The first recording of the late singer Hibari Misora performing during a 1950 tour of the United States has been discovered by a University of Chicago professor.

The recording includes performances by Misora, aged 13 at time, on June 24 and 25 in Sacramento, California, at a time when overseas visits by Japanese nationals were restricted under the Allied Occupation, professor Michael Bourdaghs said Thursday.

The 50-year-old academic unearthed it among a number of Japanese songs stored in the wire recorder of a Canadian collector. Bourdaghs, an expert on contemporary Japanese literature, made the find while researching a book on popular Japanese music.
