Scraps of plastic bags wreck havoc on fish in Japan

Marine experts say that marine pollution is causing increasing numbers of a species of deep-sea lancet fish to be washed onto a beach in Shizuoka Prefecture with fragments of plastic in their stomachs. The number of lancent fish being washed onto Miho Beach, a scenic spot on Suruga Bay that is well known for its Miho no Matsubara pine forest, has risen almost 10-fold in the past two years. Tadashi Kubota, 72, professor emeritus of Tokai University, and Yoshihide Ito, 46, curator of the university’s Social Education Center, reported that scraps of plastic bags and other fragments of plastic can be found in the stomachs of 80 percent of the fish washed ashore.
