Crown Prince Naruhito Returns from Spain

Japan’s Crown Prince Naruhito has ended his official visit to Spain after a trip to a Christian pilgrimage site in the northwest. His visit marked the 400th anniversary of relations between the 2 countries.

The Crown Prince visited the ancient city of Santiago de Compostela on Saturday.

The city is one of the 3 major Christian pilgrimage sites along with Rome and Jerusalem. The body of Saint James the Greater is believed to have been buried in the city.

The pilgrimage route from France to the city over the Pyrenees is registered as a World Heritage site.

Japan Crown Prince Naruhito’s Speaks to U.N.

Japanese Crown Prince Naruhito delivered a keynote speech on disaster reduction at a U.N. conference Wednesday, the first Japanese Imperial Family member to make an address at the U.N. Headquarters.

At the U.N. General Assemblys special session on water and disasters, the crown prince called for international discussions to improve the worlds preparedness for tsunami and other water-related disasters.   

In his speech, the crown prince explained major disasters in Japan, such as the Great East Japan Earthquake two years ago and the Jogan earthquake in 869, both of which unleashed massive tsunami.
