Japan to develop oil-rich rocky islands

Japan says it will begin building facilities on its southernmost islands, which have been described by China as little more than barren rocks barely above the ocean’s surface.

Okinotori lies 1,800 kilometres south of Tokyo and consists of two rocky islets poking just centimetres out of the ocean.

Japan has gone to great lengths to protect the outcrops from erosion, reinforcing them with concrete.
