US soldiers at Okinawa base ‘selling tours’

Hundreds of requests from base residents to bring visitors inside the top-security facilities have been turned down in recent weeks, according to officials at the US Air Force’s Kadena Air Base, the home of the USAF’s 18th Wing and the hub of US air power in the western Pacific.

Base personnel are permitted to bring guests into the facility, officials said, but they are required to know the individual. Local companies have been taking advantage of lax security for a couple of years by recruiting military personnel or their family members to escort them past the gate guards and provide a guided tour.
